direct mail

I have a database which works like an appointment with many documents that contain people names, addresses and phones.  I´d like to know how to build something like a direct mail, in order to print labels.

I think there`s nothing you can do to print labels from Lotus Notes client. Will be better for you read Lotus Databases from C/C++, VB, PowerBuilder, etc. program using a Lotus Notes API, or another specific tool. Another way is to access via NotesSQL ODBC with any tool. Tell me what tool do you prefer to use and I'll help you to find the right library.

Could you tell me more about accessing via NotesSQL ODBC ? How would it work ?

It´s a ODBC driver that you can use from any tool that uses this middleware, like Cristal Reports, VB, PowerBuilder, etc. You can create a datasource and make any kind of SQL Query. If you don`t have any performance requirement, you can use it.

But the data are already in notes documents. I want to read from the fields of Notes documents, and make a direct mail from there. I don´t understand where I would use SQL queries ...??

Yes, the data you will query are lotus Documents and their fields. It is not a conversion tool. The ODBC driver executes your Queries retrieving rows from Notes Documents (each row will be a different document). I don't remember well, but I think that your Database forms and Views are seen by this drivers as SQL tables. You don't have to worry about the search mechanism, it is solved by ODBC layer. I've never used them in production environments, but it works. Obviously, if you look for high performance, this is not the right choice, will be better to program in Notes C/C++ API.
Other think that you can do is to export a view to a file and use other tool to perform your Direct mail (like Word mail-merge)

I think this option (export a view to a file and use other tool to perform Direct mail) would be nice to me . You said I could use "Word mail-merge". Where can I find it ?

if you are using a standard sheet of labels say three arross and five down you cando as follows:
create a form
create five layoutregions on the fist layout region create five fields NAME_1 , ADDRESS_1_1, ADDRESS_2_1,ADDRESS_3_1,ADDRESS_4_1
then make put them underneath each other on the left the in the middle do the same but addone to the last number of each field then the same for the right hand side of the layout now repeat this until all the layouts are filled.
now create a postopen script that does as follows
gets the first document in the view then start a counter from 0 (counter = counter+1) now use a  for while loop to populate the fields remembering to say that when counter = 25 print and blank all the fields use a for all statement
this is the perfect label printer yet you willneed to play around with thelayout regions and printer margins a bit
hope you still needthis
if you need any help
