Did you try double-clicking the bar?

Yes, double-click can collapse the window.  I just wonder why
the button has disappeared.  Did I accidently erased some
extensions?

There is a setting in OS 8 to turn that on and off.  Unfortunately, I do not have a Mac in front of me at work.  Look in the Preferences... under the Edit menu in the Finder.  Also try the Appearance control panel.  It may be a different contorl panel that escapes me right now.  But in one of those place, you have the option of collapsing on double-click and/or with the button.
