zip drive
Hi. Have a cyrix mII 300 processor and asus motherboard. 64mb sdram.win98. Bought a iomega zip drive. works ok for things like pics. But when I took some files home from work
and tried to open them it freezes up and I got a system does not have enough memory to run program. It is a fairly large program in quickbooks. Also music and video tend to run very slow through the zip drive, although at work they run fine on a lesser machine. I use a parallel port and wonder if the problem lies there. also got a crash in rundle32 when I tried to play a video through the zip. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Are you short on "DOS" memory?
Bring up an MSDOS windows and type MEM:
Microsoft(R) Windows 95
(C)Copyright Microsoft Corp 1981-1996.
C:\>mem
Memory Type Total Used Free
---------------- -------- -------- --------
Conventional 632K 85K 547K <<<<This number is important!!!
Upper 0K 0K 0K
Reserved 0K 0K 0K
Extended (XMS) 65,528K 65,528K 0K
---------------- -------- -------- --------
Total memory 66,160K 65,613K 547K
Total under 1 MB 632K 85K 547K
Largest executable program size 547K (559,728 bytes)
Largest free upper memory block 0K (0 bytes)
MS-DOS is resident in the high memory area.
C:\>
If the number noted is less than about 540K you probably are loading too many device drivers or need to move some stuff into high-memory.

Thanks jhance. I will try that. I thought of one other thing. Is it possible the "quickbook" folder i am trying to transfer to the zip does not have all the nessesary file to execute the program. Can their be files somewhere else on the hard drive that are not in the "quickbook" folder and that is why I cannot bring it up on my computor. I also get the message"a device is not working properly" when I try to bring up the program from the zip. Thanks, again
Generally, you can't just copy the contents of a directory like QuickBooks to another drive and have it run. Most programs install junk in the \WINDOWS and/or \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory and these are required to run as well. The "out of memory" error often doesn't mean what it says. It usually mean "out of resources" and this can be caused by a variety of factors including missing or out of version DLLs. The only part you need from QuickBooks to move from one system to another is the file that gets created when you tell it to backup. If you install QB on your system at home and then just move the backup file back and forth, you'll have everything you need.
