how do i get message rules to apply to messages ?   they are always blended out in the menus ?

don't trust Outlook... Eudora Light 3.0 or Claris Emailer are better

*sigh*  Looks like apetz was bitten by the Microsoft Conspiracy Theory bug.  :-/  Outlook Express 4.x is a great app. Beautiful interface, modern features, easy to work with...wonderful. Eudora Light 3.1.3 is the latest (and last?) version and doesn't support all the modern email protocols. And Emailer is a dead application, unsupported driftwood from now on. But anyway...
You're not clear if you're trying to get rules applied to mail messages or newsgroup messages. The principles are the same. I'm assuming you've already created a rule (or rules) and they're set to apply to incoming and/or outgoing messages. Once that's done and they're enabled, rule processing is automatic. If you're trying to apply rules to messages which you've already received (i.e., your IN BOX) then you'll need to select all of your messages (COMMAND-A) and then go to the MESSAGE menu, slide down to APPLY RULE, and select either ALL RULES or just the rule you want to work with.
