irregular 10/100 ethernet?

Why would my ethernet be running slow (Taking nearly 1/2hr to trasfer 15mb) and then being able to send some packages twice the size in a 1/4 of the time at different times. This irregularity causes a lot of time wasting. 10 computers have 10/100 fast ethernet cards installed 2 are internall standard ethernet cards. the file sharing set up is fine, there isn't a surver in place yet but is it worth it if the data trasfer is so irregular.

Your problem stems from peer to peer networking in combination with using a HUB instead of a Switch in between the machines. A switch will allow simultaneous ethernet connections to take place. A HUB on the other hand will only allow one connection.

A server would speed things up too.
