Hexen II: no CD sound

I am running Hexen II (actually glHexen) v1.11. If I set options to MIDI music, I can hear some music, and see the console message that some .MID file is being played. If I set options to CD music, I hear nothing and the CD doesn't spin. Why?

moreover, the console doesn't accept cd as a command.

What is wrong?

Have you tried playing a music CD from your CDROM drive before?  If not, first make sure that it works.  If not, you probably have a bad CD driver (that's if it doesn't spin like you said)... if it spins, then you don't have a red-book audio cable.  Just pick one up and connect it from your CD to you Sound Card

I have CD music with Hexen, and music CDs. But for Hexen II, the game just doesn't touch the CD ROM drive. Which is weird, because I was told that v1.03 *requires* the existence of the game CD in the drive. I haven't played v1.03 because I patched it to 1.11 before I started playing (to avoid any incompatibility in saved games). I can now play the game without the game CD. Which actually annoys me because I was also told that Hexen II has very good music.

Do you have a DOS CDROM driver loading in your config.sys?  If so, try disabling it and using only the Windows drivers.  There may be some kind of compatability issue.

thanks istakkie for trying. I found the problem now. Really stupid. Unfortunately, I can't answer it myself. See if you can answer it before others: yesterday, I tried to run Hexen II directly from the production directory (instead of glHexen from the start menu), and get CD sound. Then I tried running glHexen from the directory, and also get CD sound. The problem? I adapted the glHexen shortcut from glQuake shortcut, and one of the parameters is...

Double check your parameters on the shortcut!

Glad that you were able to solve it.  I was running around all day yesterday on many websites to find anything on what could be happening!

the offending parameter is "-nocdaudio" :)
