How do you index a column in Notes so that your query will run faster in say Crystal Reports.

Indexing columns in Notes is simply a matter of sorting the column.  Make sure you also set the view property to include Unique Indexes for ODBC access.
One thing worth noting is that the size of the view is related to the number of indexes and therefore the number of sorted and categorised columns.
There is a limit to the size of views (in help - search for Notes limits) and the perfromance of them decreases pretty much exponentially as you get anywhere near this limit.  You can check the size in the server log.
Because of this you might find that you are better creating specific, one column hidden views for your queries.
