A firewall is a protection for internet. The people can't enter in your network if you have a firewall.

Firewalls also can provide IP filtering. You can control where your users go using the firewall. You can set it up permissive or restrictive. Permissive allows access to all sites except ones you list. Restrictive denys access to all except ones listed.

TCP/IP allows you to set up a communications link between two IP addresses. A firewall only allows connections to be formed from the inside out and blocks attempts at connections being established from the outside in.

Firewalls can also act as PROXY server. In this case your internal IP addresses are hidden from the outside world. The sites on the outside only see *one* IP address (the firewalls) instead of seeing any of your internal addresses.
