PC Read Only ?

I can not install a VB6 program. The installation request to update the DLLs and restart the computer, the run set up again. This keeps recurring. Also if I change any options in Word (small business package) when word is exited and restarted these changes are lost. The computer is a gateway and their tech support want windows 95 completely deleted and then installed again. This is too big a fix for this particular PC and would take a long time to put back all the drivers and software as is. Does EXPERT Exchange have a less extreme solution. I have noticed that the System.dat and User.dat return to READONLY once the computer restarts and I check the properties through Windows.

In a word ... No You probably will have to re-install windows....
The registry files on my PC are read-only and my computer works fine.....

BTW If you have a second Pentium Class computer..... and a second HDD of the similar capacity....
Format & re-install windows 95 With All the software you want for the Gateway..
THEN install the HDD into the gateway computer... Boot in SAFE mode... go to the device manager... delete ALL entries ... Reboot and redetect the gateways hardware....  this will minimize the downtime on the Gateway....

Just my 2 Cents worth
