squid and ftp client

my ftp client can not ftp via the squid proxy server,

Is there something i am missing,
I have tried alot from the client side,
Enabling proxy , using port 3128 ,.....
maybe someone can give me exact steps to follow ,
my proxy is up and running , i can ftp with netscape,
...
hope this is enough info ..

ftp cannot be 'proxied' like you think it can, I suggest using a socks5 server (you can download it from rpmfind.net for Redhat) or use IP-Masquerade with ip_masq_ftp.o installed (modprobe ip_masq_ftp) for instructions on how to setup IP-Masquerade see http://www.indyramp.com/masq/
