Is there a small-free-sql-database than can be used freely in a single user application?
MSQL is not good since it since commercial applications do not qualify the license terms.

As an answer to you specific question,  you can use InstantDB at:

http://www.instantdb.co.uk/

You can also use RMIJDBC, as an option, to connect to any ODBC compliant DB.
