How do I add icons to menus similar to those in MS Office and Visual Studio??

There are lot of  sample applications for ICON BASED MENU
(Owner drawn menu ) like Office

do you mean to add icon to the tool bar or creating the new tool bar?

See the MSJ January 1998 article by Paul DiLascia (and download the code from www.microsoft.com/msj)

His class, CCoolMenuManager is very simple to use, something like this:

    // In the CMainFrame class definition
    CCoolMenuManager m_coolMenu;

    // In CMainFrame::OnCreate
    m_coolMenu.Install(this);
    m_coolMenu.LoadToolbar(IDR_MAINFRAME);

and that's it, you have menus with perfectly working bitmaps on them.
