Write Protect error - Writing fixed disk

I formatted my hard drive.   I booted with a bootable floppy
typed in Fdisk at the A:\.  Pressed Y for large disk access. I deleted primary partition.  Then I deleted the primary dos partition.   Then  when the computer started to count to 100% it got as far as 18% then I received this message:
Write Protect Error   Writing fixed disk.... Now what do I do?

FYI : Partition - c:1,  Status: A  Type Pri Dos Mybtes 4110, System-Unknown,  Usage 100%

HELP!
A little more info would help here. This is a 4GB hard drive. Is it new to the PC?  I had some older machines that wouldn't recognize anything over 1.2 GB.  The BIOS just choked.

Secondly, what version of Windows are you using to format this drive?  If it's Win95B and you are formatting FAT32 that's good, it's 95 or 95A, then it's just not going to do it.

My computer was up and running.  This is not a new hard drive. Maybe I should say that I am trying to  reformatt  it.  Before I wiped out the hard drive,  my scandisk won't not scan over 78%.  Said something about a FAT file.  It wouldn't defrag at all.  I have Windows 95.  Whatever went wrong with the scandisk is a recent problem.  Was working fine a month or so ago.  The computer was built for me in November 1997.   I haven't updated windows or the drive or anything else in the computer.

It does sound like a physical error on the drive doesnt it?  Is money an issue in this case? You might want to consider gettinga  6GB for about 200 dollars.

FDISK is not required to "reformat" the drive. If all you were intending to do was reformat then good old FORMAT C: /S would have done the trick. Resorting to FDISK is usually done only *AFTER* FORMAT C: /S has failed.

What exactly did SCANDISK say about the FAT? I think you've got some marginal hardware here.

I have the same problem with my note book.

It gives me the same error message when it completes until I exit FDISK.

mark2150's comments won't work to me.

What can I do?

Thank so much.
If you're getting "Write Protect" under FDISK then it's probably time for a new drive.

Try FDISK /MBR to rewrite the master boot record.

If that doesn't work and your BIOS supports low level disk formatting you might want to try than and then retry FDISK.

If the above doesn't work then the disk has crashed and time for a new drive.
