Error Loading TWEAKUI.CPL

I loaded TWEAKUI on my system just to check it out.
Unfortunately, my system administrator had disabled it so I couldn't check it out on this machine.  I then needed to uninstall it.  I could not find an uninstall program so I just did a search for TWEAKUI and deleted all folders containing this name.  Now when I boot I get an error box.  The blue title line reads RUNDLL and the message is "Error Loading TWEAKUI.CPL   The system cannot find the file specified".

Now I have two questions.  1. how do I delete the reference to this file so that I do not get this error message on boot?  2. What is the proper procedure to delete Tweakui?

Please do not suggest that I reinstall it and use the proper uninstall procedure as I won't learn much by doing that.

Thanks, You guys are better teachers than my teachers.

Hi...

1. Try searching the Registry for any reference to the file, then deleting it. but before you do that, make sure to make a backup of your untouched registry.

Click START | RUN then type REGEDIT then click OK to open the Registry Editor

In the Editor, click on REGISTRY | EXPORT REGISTRY FILE... now choose the place that you want to keep the in, but make sure that you choose the ALL radio button in the EXPORT RANGE section. (expect the file to be in excess of 5.5MB!!)

Now that you have your backup copy of your registry, begin a search of you registry by clicking EDIT | FIND (or pressing CTRL+F on the keyboard)

insert TWEAKUI in the FIND WHAT window then press the ENTER key.

Delete the entry that you find (press the keyboard's DELETE key), then press the F3 key to find the next entry. Repeat this until you find no more entries.

Reboot the PC, & see if the message appears again.

2. The proper procedure to delete TWEAKUI or any other program is to open the CONTROL PANEL | ADD REMOVE PROGRAMS find the program you want to delete among the selection provided & highlighting it, then click on the ADD/REMOVE... button.

Then, since most programs leave the customizations that you've performed on the program in a folder inside the original installation folder, it is better to use the WINDOWS EXPLORER to remove the original folder created during the installation process. BUT... only do this if you DO NOT want to keep these customizations.

------

I would install TWEAKUI again, then try to uninstall it as per step 2 above to see if it fixed the problem.

Hope this helps.....
If installing TWEAKUI, then following step 2 didn't fix you problem, go for step 1

A word of caution....

Damaging your registry will render your PC useless & require you to install windows again to fix it.
HereIGoAgain, try this.
----For your information to comprehand the mechanism of TweakUI------

Installation of Tweak UI :-

Following files are added to your system Win98 :-

[TweakUI.Files.Inf]
TWEAKUI.INF       C:\Windows\inf     --  setup information

[TweakUI.Files.Hlp]
TWEAKUI.HLP       C:\Windows\Help
TWEAKUI.CNT       C:\Windows\Help

[TweakUI.Files.AutoGen]
TWEAKUI.GID       C:\Windows\Help
TWEAKUI.FTS       C:\Windows\Help

It will create registry edited as:-
[TweakUI.Add.Reg]
(1)    HKLM,%UTWEAK%,DisplayName,,"PowerToy - %TWEAKUI% - Uninstall"
(2)    HKLM,%UTWEAK%,UninstallString,,"%10%\rundll.exe setupx.dll,InstallHinfSection DefaultUninstall 132 %17%\Tweakui.inf"

Then select the folder name "Uninstall\Tweak UI" and click EDIT-DELETE to delete it.

     Then, exit registry.

     Restart the Pc.

4)   Counterchecking the Uninstallation of TweakUI

Go to the control panal, there should be no TweakUI icon.
Go to the Add/remove programs, Install/Uninstall tab, no "TweakUI" component.
Use Find to check any name "tweak" exist in your system.
-- You cannot find those above 6 names tweak files in their directory.
Go to the regedit, the HKSMWCV\Uninstall , no TweakUI folder
Go to the regedit, the HKSMWCV\Run ,  no Tweak UI name in the run list.

ASKER

alforaih,

Thanks for the response.  It looks to me like either of those solution would work, however, I cannot reload tweakui and my system administrator has disabled regedit on my system.  Is there any way to accomplish this without those abilities?

Brad
HerelGoAgain, if administrator disabled the regedit, you cannot do any edit of registry unless your administrator enabled your user profile to do it.
Have you tried my suggestion (1)? Can you go to the 'msconfig' without the administrator approval ?    pslh

HereIGoAgain, I wonder why you rejected my proposed answer and did not mention anything? Have you really tried that or are you having some prejudices and I'm sure my proposed did the right track to correct your boot error and uninstall the TweakUI.  Please advise as I've lot of queries why that was being rejected.     pslh

pslh,

Oops......  Thank you for being patient enough to post another answer with even more information after I goofed up on your first answer.   Somehow I rejected the wrong answer.  (My wife can't decide if it's Alzheimers or if I'm passive/agressive)  Your first answer was indeed correct.   Going to MSConfig&Control Panel resolved the issue.  Beyond the issue that I wrote about, you addressed my desire to understand what was happening inside the box.  The additional information that you provided was very useful to me.   Thanks again for a GREAT answer.

Brad
Brad, nice to hear it solved. Thank you for your A grade.   ;P <smile>   pslh
