floppy disk failure
At startup am getting a floppy disk failure message. I checked power and sash connections to the floppy and both seem fine. When I put a disk in the light goes on and it makes noise but a message appears that the drive is not accesible. What do i do now?
Does the light stay on all the time?? that sounds like a backward cable, Does your cable have a twisted part? if so this part must go to the floppy side, then if there is a #1 on the floppy and your MB then line up the red stripe with that, if you cannot see a #1 then it is trial and error to get it right, just try all the combinations but keep the twisted end toward the floppy, you can flip it over but it has to stay on the floppy end.
What was you doing just before this happened? Was you working on hte inside?

DLT, # one on the drive is always next to the power connector. The motherboard is another story though, but it should be marked on the board on which end #1 is supposed to be.

" # one on the drive is always next to the power connector" Dennis this is not true with floppy drives, I have one with the # 1 pin on the other end, it was a nightmare figuring this out since it was not marked, I can't remember the manufacter's name at this moment (too lazy to take the case apart) But I will agree most are set up with pin # 1 next to the power hookup.

Yes, normally the stripe on the cable goes to the side with the power connector, except Mitsumi makes some floppys with the power connector on top of the cable connector and to the right and the stripe still goes to the left, looking from the back. Make sure that the setting for the drive are correct in CMOS. If the light stays on, then it is normally a reversed cable. There are some of the older floppys,(i cant remember the manufacturer either) that had the stripe to the opposite side of the power connector, but normally if reversed, the light stays on when booting. If the drive is making a new (or a lot of) noise, you may just have a bad drive.
Have u tried more than 1 disk?
One quick comment. Make sure your floppy drive (if it has jumpers) is set to cable select (CS). I have a floppy drive that allows you to chose between CS, A or B.

I am receiving a similar error, but under different circumstances. Check the unanswered message: No Disk in Drive Error. Some comments are quite helpful.
