I put in the photo cartridge and when I try and align it I get partial alignment lines. The red part prints but no black part so all the lines look alike.

Clean the head (follow the head clean procedure of the printer) then try again. If that doesn't work, return the cartridge for an exchange.

The reference to cleaning the head worked. I took the cart out to look at it since it was new and there was a small piece of plastic still stuck to the bottom. It had somehow separated from the larger piece of protective plastic.

Gotta be careful there. It's easy to do. Next item of joy: discover "ink refills"!  :-)  Good luck with the printer. It's a good one. I own an HP myself (the venerable 500c)
