Upgrades and original program ownership

My system (pentium II) was custom-made by a friend who then ghosted his hard drive to mine. I would like to download or buy CD upgrades for WIN98, McAfee Virus and Netscape Communicator. Will these companies allow me to buy and register the upgrades without owning registered originals?

Probably not, unless your friend is willing to provide you with a letter that he/she has sold you the system as well as the software and attests that he or she will no longer have that registered software on their system. Technically speaking, he/she has already committed software piracy if they gave you the software while maintaining it on their machine.

When you go to register the upgrade, it will probably pop with his or her name as the owner. I understand that this can be changed in the registry, however I doubt someone on this site will explain the procedure as to do so would be a violation of this sites policies.
