Whats the difference between SCSI and IDE

I am looking at a TOSHIBA 40X CD ROM and the SCSI is $84, the IDE is only $48...is it worth it???

Depends on if you already have a SCSI controller or not... SCSI is easier to configure and generally faster to run.

I don't have a SCSI controller, so would you say that the speed is twice as fast as an IDE?

No. The speed difference now between SCSI and IDE is very little. Especially concerning CD-ROM Drives. The maximum throughput for UDMA/33 IDE is 33MBps and for Ultra SCSI3 its 40MBps. A CD-ROM Drive will never ever attain these speeds. The maximum a 40X CD ROM can attain is 6MBps (150KBps X 40). IDE is more than you need. The SCSI version is available mostly because of  older computers like Macs and Suns that did not come with IDE on board and SCSI is the only option. I would get the IDE version.
