Tell Win 98 who it is licensed to

I just bought a new computer (Compaq Presario 5360) which was setup at the store.  When I got it home I clicked on Help in the "My Computer" folder and then clicked the "About Windows 98" selection.  It said this copy of Windows 98 was licensed to "Prefered Customer".  Obviously this was not changed in the original setup at the store even though they had my name on the bill of sale.

Could you tell me how I can change this to my name now?  Thanks.

bobsing, take a look and try this:
When installation of win98, it should enter the name and company of the owner.  Compaq should enter its default's name for you.

You can go to Start-Settings-Control panel,
Select the system icon, click into it.
There, at the General Tab, you can see Win98 is registered to:
name of user: xxxxxx
company     : zzzzzz
Product ID  : 12345-123-1234567-12345

You jot them down.

You can custom-change it into your name/company, Method:-

Go to Start-Run, at the open box type "regedit" without quotation mark.
Then OK. You will go to the Registry Editor,

Point to the path :
My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

Here, you find , point at the name of the right pane of window.

RegisteredOrganization   zzzzzz
RegisteredOwner          xxxxxx

At the menu, select Edit, modify , entering your own defined name, Then exit the registry editor.

Restart the computer.

You can check the changes by the system icon at the control panal again.
Let me know if you have any queries.     pslh
