Harddisk problem when installing SUSE Linux 6.1
Posted on 1999-07-12
i have some problems installing SUSE Linux 6.1 on my Pentium-133 (ATI Mach64, ESS 1688, HDD EIDE Seagate 1.2GB).
As the HDD is older, it has some faulty sectors. My previous installation (win98) already told it me).
The HDD does some noise when i try to format it -> bad sectors :-(((
The problem: when installing (boot from CD #1, run yast), yast tries to initialize the SWAP space (64 MB). I waited about 2 (!!!) hours, then i killed it.
I think yast should determine that there are some errors on the HDD and mark them in his inode table and then go on...
Have i killed it too early?
I don't want to buy me a new HDD as ithink the old one should still work with my needs (as long as it really crashes...) so please do NOT tell me s.th like 'buy you a new HDD'.
Any suggestions ??? What about installing without SWAP and then integrating it? Or creating the partitions first (fdisk) then e2fsck ?
Any ideas rcommended. (Best and easisest one working will be 200 points or more !!!)
