Is there a way to disable the fast shutdown on Win98? It seems to be causing problems the next time I start my computer. Seems I read this somewhere but forget where now.

KenRex,
Go start-run , type "msconfig" at the open box without the quotation mark, Click OK.
At the System Configuration Utility -General Tab, click the [Advanced] button, checked the box
[x] Disable fast shutdown
Confirm OK.

Restart win98 to effect changes.

By routine practice, manually delay for about 3 - 5 sec in pressing of the POWER OFF button once reading the "Safe to Shut down".  It lets time for the harddisk to writeback cache and terminate any background tasks.

Try and let me know.       pslh
