VPICD - windows protection error

I cannot reboot my computer(even in SAFE mode).
I always get the following error message:
While initializing device VPICD:
windows protection error. You need to restart your computer.
Is it a software or hardware problem?  How to solve it?

The VPICD or Virtual Programmable Interrupt Controller Device is a standard Windows 95 driver.  The problem you're having is that somehow this driver was either corrupted or may have been replaced by a third-party product.  I think your best bet would be to boot to a DOS prompt and reinstalling windows 95.  This should clean this error up.

Comment:  Re-installing windows is really a solution of last resort.
I was finally able to re-boot after leting the computer rest (ie. cool-down) for a couple of hours.
I believe my problem is hardware (memory) related, since
I also got the following error message:
"himem.sys has detected unreliable XMS memory at address 03000006.  XMS driver not installed.
