Unix web database?

What the best web database for Unix?  I've never worked w them before and could use some suggestions. This DB could get very large (how large I don't know)
I am familiar w Perl and something easily searchable would be perfect...
Any advice would be great...

You basically have 2 options: either go for a small-scale system thats less overhead to start and then migrate, or just start with a big system. Databases are complex beasts, so the best place to start is with DBM files. Perl has a DBM library and DBMs are pretty fast and efficient for quite a while. When you start hitting a few 100 meg, maybe look at the full-size databases. Remember that databases require management and tuning and other time-and-effort related activities. A good starting choice would be MySQL (http://www.tcx.se), which runs on multiple platforms and OS's.
