ArrayList versus Vector, HashMap versus Hashtable

Hello there,

I don't really get the difference between following classes: ArrayList and Vector. When shall I use ArrayList instead of Vector?

Ok, so it means using ArrayList instead of Vector is faster (I mean: there is no need checking the synchronization each time)? (sorry if it's clumsy)
