MODEM INSTALLATION

LIGHTNING STRUCK A TREE AND MESSED UP MY PHONE LINES.  GTE REPAIRED MY LINES, BUT AFTER THIS HAPPENED EVERY TIME I PLUGGED MY PHONE LINE INTO MY MODEM THE PHONES WOULD ALL GO DEAD. I WENT AND BOUGHT A NEW MODEM (ZOOM)FIGURING THAT THE MODEM GOT FRIED.  NOW I'M HAVING PROBLEMS INSTALLING THE NEW MODEM WITH LITTLE HELP FROM TECH SUPPORT.  I REMOVED THE OLD MODEM THRU CONTROL PANEL & PHISICALLY.  I INSTALLED THE DRIVERS FOR THE NEW MODEM BEFORE ACTUALLY PUTTING THE MODEM INTO THE COMPUTER (AS DIRECTED) I HAD TO CHANGE THE JUMPERS TO COM 2 & IRQ 3 (THE SAME AS THE OLD MODEM I TOOK OUT) THE MODEM IS PLUG-N-PLAY BUT WINDOWS WONT DETECT THE MODEM AT ALL.  WHEN I TRY TO MANUALLY INSTALL THE MODEM, IT ONLY GIVES MY THE OPTION OF CHOOSING COM 1 OR LPT1 FOR PORTS.  WHY WON'T WINDOWS DETECT THE MODEM.  I EVEN RE-INSTALLED THE OLD MODEM AND WINDOWS DETECTED IT FINE AND INSTALLED DRIVERS FOR IT.  MY COMPUTER IS AN HP APPROX 1 YR OLD, WIN95.  THANKS!

I have an article that is more revelant than knowme.  The article provided to you by knowme is a Windows 98 article but you have Windows 95.  This article describes how to get the com port your modem is on recognized.  http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/ARTICLES/Q130/7/96.asp
Muffy,

1/ remove your modem (s)

2/ go into control panel/add new hardware

3/ choose do not detect, choose add communication port, if you only have one, it will add com2, close and shutdown

4/ put your new modem in as com2/irq3

5/ if not detected on boot, go into control panel/modems and let windows detect.

you should be off and running.

Easy on the Caps please (yelling)

plug and play will not work when you set the jumpers, in the directions for my US Robotics it say to leave the jumpers off if you use plug and pray, if you use the jumpers then you have to install the modem yourself.

Thank you so much everyone.  The best and closest answer I found was from oldgreyguy.  (step by step's are wonderful!)  However, nothing I tried worked.  I did finally get com2 installed, but after that it kept saying "com port already open" when I clicked on more info in modems/control panel.  When I installed com2 it told me there was a hardware conflict.  Com2 kept installing with com1's address & irq (I changed it to 02f8 & irq3, but still problems) I finally got a hold of Zoom support (can't wait to see the long distance charges!!)  The guy was such a jerk and mumbled so low I could hardly hear him, but we finally figured it out.  To tell you the truth - I really cant even recall what exactly we did because we did so much.  He was completely stumped for a long time.  I dont know why but we moved the jumpers to be set on com1 even though it shows in the device manager its on com2. ???Confusing???
To rayt333:  I had removed all the jumpers and still it would not detect the modem. PS. Sorry about the YELLING :)
Thanks again!
If the best answer was from the oldgreyguy, then he should have received the points.
no worries, loud dogs get the bones, I'm glad she got squared away,

I'm sorry, I guess I don't understand how this works.  I thought I could only give the points to knowme.  Oldgreyguy should have gotten the pts.  My apologies Oldgreyguy!! Could someone please tell me the correct way it should have been done??
You should have rejected any answer that didn't work and then ask the "expert" that gave you the info that helped the most towards solving your problem to post as the answer
