I can recommend from my own installation experience, that you make an effort to purchase Partition Magic 4.0. Their web site is located at

This is a very flexible program that has "wizard" style guides that take you step by step through the process of re-sizing your hard disk, and making room for Linux. And the best part is, you don't lose any data when this is done. The program formats the new space for you and leaves it ready for Linux to make itself at home.

What will happen, you will end up with something that makes Linux see "hd1 hda2" or something of the sorts. You can then tell the installation program to install to "hda2" or whatever the higher hd label is, since this will be the space on your disk that is ready for Linux to be installed. You also have the option to install BootMagic, which will give you a menu of operating systems to boot your PC with.

You might also want to check or any other popular shareware/freeware site, there may be a utility that is readily available similar to Partition Magic.

Let me know if this helps!
