How do I remove these last two remaining files from my hard drive. My error message says it's looking for turbobf.vxd in the sys.ini or in the registry.
I did a Winmodem uninstall, and removed the Winmodem from the device manager.
Then I did a find Winmodem a deleted even more files.
However there are two remaining files that Windows won't let me delete because It says they are being used by Windows. They are winmodem.101 and winmodem. I can see these files in the file manager main under c:\win\sys,but am unable to delete them. I don't know how to delete these files.
My goal was to remove Winmodem and files to upgrade to a better modem. Help please!!

AT YOUR OWN RISK:

reboot your system into "SAFE MODE COMMAND PROMPT ONLY", at the c:\ type the following:

cd windows    and enter         (are you sure its not windows as a directory name?)

cd system     and enter         (ditto do you mean system directory?)

this will take you to the directory that contains the offensive files, the next command is followed by a space and then the file name (example if filename.txt)

DELTREE FILENAME.TXT                and enter, it will come back for a confirmation of deletion, say y for yes and it is gone

do the same for the other file, then reboot and they are gone.......................sure hope windows doesn't decide to want those files

for the turbobf.vxd, open NOTEPAD, and then open SYSTEM.INI (in your windows directory), do a search for turbobf.vxd, and delete the line, save and exit, reboot and see if the message is gone, if not it is in the registry, reject my answer and let a braver soul than I help you there

AGAIN, IF YOU ARE NOT COMFORTABLE WITH LEAPING INTO DARK HOLES AT MIDNIGHT, YOU MAY NOT LIKE THE RESULTS IF WINDOWS REALLY WANTED THOSE FILES.

I follow your answer except that I don't know how to get to the SAFE MODE as you suggested. Help!

when your machine is booting you will see a message in the DOS screen (you have to be quick) that says "STARTING WINDOWS 9X", when this appears hit the F8 key and you will come to a menu with 6-7 choices, choose the SAFE MODE COMMAND PROMPT ONLY, and that will take you to a DOS prompt without windows loading
