Actually, I have four question which I think an experienced Notes user will answer without problems. Thanks in advance:

1. When registering new users, we get a warning: ”The current certifier ID contains no recovery information and will not allow ID/password recovery on ID’s created with this certifier. The ’EscrowAgent’ ID recovery mechanism is no longer supported.” What does this message mean, and how can we correct it?

2. When registering new users, we choose to store the user ID in the Domino directory. When the user configure Notes for the first time, the ID is retrived and stored locally as ’user.id’. Is this now the only copy of the file (it disappears from the Domino directory) and can it be renamed later?

3. How can we create multiple email adresses (aliases), for example: ’joe@acme.com’ and ’joe.dole@acme.com’, and the mail still goes to the same user/mail-file?

4. We have some problems to get our e-mails sent immediately (we have a router connection to internet.) The Domino-server tells us ’The SMTP server not available / not an internet host.’ But if we get the router to dial-up the connection by using ’ping’ or whatever, the server sends the mail immediately. How can we make the server trigger the connection itself?

1) There is a new feature in R5 called 'ID File Recovery' that is used in replacement for the old method of using the escrow agent.  When u create the certifier ID, u must configure it to use recovery information, since u havent done that its reminding u that u cant use Escrow Agents for recovery purposes, its mainly for administrators who were using R4. I think u should be able to disable it, check yes or no for future messages. To use file recovery, go to the congfiguration tab then select REcovery Information from the certification tools menu.
2)If u used file recovery the id will also be stored in a directory u choose.  This file can be renamed without harm.
3)In each person's doc there is a field called short name or internet address, u can put in here multiple value seperate them with a comma or new space.
4)Can u elaborate please...when someone sends an email, this message will be displayed?

For number 4 u probably didnt configure the native SMTP Routing correctly. u must create/edit a server configuration document, set SMTP options on the Router/SMTP tab.

Regarding pt. 4: I don't have the exact phrase in front of me now, I'm off work. But it seems that the router is not capable of trigging the call itself.
I'll check the config-doc as soon as possible.

I've checked it now; I've dialed into our server.
We have a server config doc and in the 'Router/SMTP' and 'Basics' tab, we set the: 'SMTP used when sending messages outside of the local internet domain' setting to 'Enabled'. Everything else is default settings.

Yes, it's working fine now. We restarted our server after the change, and now it triggers a call when someone sends a message.
Regarding Q2: Why isn't the ID file recovery set on by default? And is this necessary to use; is it when someone looses their ID file? Please explain; this ID thing is a bit in the dark for us....

No its not setup by default, u have to store that information in the cert id, so once u create users from that id they will have recovery information...its not necessary if you are not a big organization.  What it will mainly do is that u will have a backup of the ID somewhere, instead of doing it manually. Basically when a user loses an ID file, he will lose all encryption keys stored in their ids, and he will not be able to access encrypted mail.  Before we used to add the user to a group called 'EscrowAgent' for keeping a backup of the id.

By the way in the smtp tab, u can do many other nice features like controling spamming and handling firewalls (I know u told me u dont have a firewall:) )

At this moment I think it's to advanced / early for us, but we have many other questions we'd like some answers on.

Here is one: We have registered several people, and one of them have a problem when sending mails. He get a message saying "You are not authorized to perform this operation" when he is clicking 'Send'. At first we thought the mails weren't sent, but they arrive fine at the destination. What does this mean, and where do we go to administer rights / access (correct the problem)?

You must tell us when you must have more points, or the question still keeps coming. We are very satisfied with your answers, both ghassan99 and Paebdb.

For that user I suggest to see if he has created some agent that is trying to access a resource which he lacks proper access, ask the user if he manipulated his mail in anyway...

Many other causes also come to mind, if this user is using his own mail.box, he must check the ACL of his mail.box, he should have depositor access, maybe he has reader access.  Try also to check the delivery options if he is enabling siging or encrypting to disable them and see if it has an effect.

We think we have found the problem: The user installed the software himself, and he told us that he first installed Notes 4.6 and tried to connect to the server without being registered. Thereafter he upgraded to R5 and connected (after we had registered him).

I suspect this must be the reason; some settings / files is the wrong version or something like that. When we installed the server, we have used default settings all the way, except those being discussed with you. And on other clients in use so far, there have been no problems.

Another question: When looking at the mail database, there is a menu entry - View - Document Preview - Show Preview. Is there a way to make this setting default? Now I have to turn this on every time I open my mail database.

Hi riegsa,
In older versions, R4 that is, there was the startup database option in the user preferences.  Now this option is removed from the user preferences. u have to right click on a database, there is the last option 'set bookmark as homepage'...if u click another db after u set a certain database, u will be notified if u want to replace the older db. to add the db to your bookmarks, just drag its task icon on the top to the bookmark icon on the left bar. Ofcourse set the View-Doc Preview-Show Preview, and the db will keep it as is unless if u change the setting.
