I bought a Hewlett Packard Scanjet 4200Cse scanner and I can't figure out how to scan images into the JPEG format. I can scan images into GIF and various other formats. Do I need to buy seperate software to accomplish this seemingly simple task? If soo what do you reccomend?

Yes you need software like Adope Photoshop to scan in JPEG. You can
however scan in gif, and convert to JPEG with a graphics converter like
Graphics Workshop or Paint Shop Pro.

My scanner came with Adobe PhotoDeluxe Home Edition 3.0. Should I be able to use this program to convert to JPEG?

I'm rather suprised to hear that HP's software doesn't support .jpg/.jpeg images, but the solution is simple enough.

If you're using Windows 98, the default Microsoft Paint program can handle image exporting to a variety of bitmap depths (.bmp), .jpg and .gif formats.  Just open the .gif file of choice and File -> Save As -> select JPG format.

If you're under windows 95 (and haven't patched your paint program to support .gifs and .jpgs), or you just despise the M$ Paint software, I highly recommend ACDSee, a free image viewer and converter that is VERY fast.  It supports BMP, GIF, JPG, TGA, TIF, and more.  You can download it at:

Hope this helps.

Adobe Photo Deluxe is not the same as Adobe Photshop.
