greping for string on multiple lines

i have a file that looks something like this:

BEGIN
  blah
END

i want to extract "blah"

i'm currently using:
  if ($i =~ /BEGIN(.*)END/i) { $isMiddle = "$1"; }

however this only works if BEGIN and END are on the same line:

BEGINblahEND

arg --anyone offer an idea?
