Associate a file extension with program

Currently I have a file (*.dat) that automatically opens with notepad, however, I want to change this association to wordpad.  I checked the views/options and couldn't find the file type in the list and so I attempted to "add" a new one, but it gave me an error saying that the extension already had an association with it (DUH)..but it's not listed.  How do I go about changing the file association?

1) Open Windows Explorer(Not Internet Explorer)
2) Select Options under View
3) Select the File Type tab
4) Go to the 'Text Document'(Should be Notepad)
5) Select Edit for 'Text Document'
6) Select the '.DAT' extension under Default Extension for Content Type
7) Select Remove and should get rid of the association.
