NetBind failure ??

I try to connect to computers with TCP/IP protocol, One computer running windows98 and the other computer I what to boot on a DOS diskett including this network support. Both computer can talk with "the other" computer if both computers use windows98 so there is no fault in the network. ( I assume ). When I boot the second computer with a disk made from windows NT server CD ( MSClient Software for DOS ) I get this message.
==== BOOT SEQUENCY ========
A:\net initialize

Any Suggestions how to solve this failure ?????

What kind of network card do you have?  The disks produced by NT are device specific.  This disk is setup for a 3Com Etherlink III card.  Im not saying that isnt what you have, but you should confirm it.  Please post the EXACT model number which is on the card (somewhere on the card it will have a number like "3C509" or "3C595TX" or "3Csomething".  This is what we need.  The failure is definitely driver/card related considering the error given.

Heath
btw, the "3Csomething" is assuming that this IS a 3Com card, it may not be...

Sorry I forgot to write it, I have a Etherlink III 3C509B-C installed. If this is a definitely driver/Card related I will try and regenerate the client disk again and verify so I didn't make any mistake.

SnowMan
hmmm...  that is an etherlink III card, and you seem to be loading the proper drivers....  Is there maybe some other hardware in this computer that might be conflicting with the NIC?  From what I remember about the DOS network drivers, there are no specific IRQ settings for PCI cards, so the only thing I can think of is maybe some other device is using the same Interrupt as the NIC.  This wouldnt really cause a problem in windows 95, but I would imagine that this would confuse the dos driver, since it has to scan for the NIC cards Interrupt.  Not sure though.

Heath
as heathprovost said, check if another driver uses the IOADDRESS of the 3Com. You may use msd for this, best is to remove the 3Com before.
Use the 3c5x9cfg.exe (or whatever it's named) from the floppys to find out which is the default IO-port on the card. Then either change the IO-port on the card or the IOADDRESS in your protocol.ini .
You also may get the settings for the card when booted into W9x.
I have made a new disk just in case, but with same result.
I have allsow change the Adress and IRQ of the board to several different ( with 3c5x9cfg.exe ) without any improvments. It's saying "Error 33, Unable to Bind" everytime. Any more suggestions ???
Your Protocol.ini has the DOS real mode driver info rem-ed out (the semi-colons in the [ms$elnk3] section).Try un-remming them and verify that the NIC is in fact at address 210,and that 210 is unused by anything else (Device Manager will show this).
did you check that there are no conflicts with EMM386?
Bengt

Welcome to the world of 3Com nightmares..

I encountered a similar problem when trying to utilise GHOST at a DOS level.

I would really suggest you have a good, careful look at your protocol.ini file and compare it to the NDIS/DOS protocol.ini file supplied on the network card drivers disk.

I would send you a functional protocol.ini except, unfortunately the boot disk was sold to the client and I didn't keep a copy!

I hope you get it working.

From memory, there is something in the system.ini file as well that needs editing?

Cheers
Thanks for the offer to send a disk, sedd. I'm starting to be a expert in that 3com area, ( alot of hours in this problem ). I have finally solved it (with help of the suggestions her). ( My intentin was todo the same thing ( with Ghost ) ).
I think the failure is in the memory, Conflict, I first disable the com ports in the bios and moved the netcard IRQ to IRQ 3 and I/O 210, then I reboot the computer, Now I could send information out on the net with ping command but nothing back, I think that was I IRQ fault, So I did a autoconfig again who I have made several times without any good result, the software suggested IRQ10 and I/O 300 (as it did before) , Ok then I disable the PnP and reboot the computer then I made new client disk , Now I could do a bind with success...But I boot windows98 and did some changes in the network config. after that my new disk want start due to this message
>NET INIT
Error 3 the specified path was not found
an error occurred accessing the security settings file.

then I test the client disk who never hade work before due to bind failure ( The disk was ok in NET INIT section ) , hmm strange this disk worked ok and this is the disk I'm using now, OK I have I disk who works but the question is what is wrong with the other disk ???

>NET INIT
Error 3 the specified path was not found
an error occurred accessing the security settings file.

There are two reasons for that error..  Most likely is the absence of some necessary files in the /net directory on your boot disk.

I forget exactly what is required but that is where I would be looking.

So the disk works however?  You need to post comments about who you wish to post an answer.  Decided on who offered the most help, the solution, or split the points up with new questions and award them to more than one person!

bengt - did you miss my earlier post?

Your original problem:
'Error: 35 Unable to bind. Hardware Not found'
was most likely due to these lines in your Protocol.ini:
; IOADDRESS=0x210
; SLOT=1
; MAXTRANSMITS=6

Mattcei, If you mean the message in 29 Aug her, No I did not miss it, if you mean something else, Yes I miss it.
On Fri 3 Sept I tryed to explain how I solved the case.
and I have tryed both with and without the IOADDRESS.. without any major difference. I belive the trouble was somewere in memory (conflict) with help of PnP.
the question now is how should I do with the points ?..
I'm going to think more about who gets the points due to this difficult problem I had, probably I should give points to more than one.

cheers
not grabbing point, but how about comment from August 30 1999 - 09:34AM ?
ahoffman, hmm I hope you mean August 30 1999 - 12:34AM otherwise I have not seen your message. If you mean 12:34 message My comment is, I'dont realy know were the conflict was, I'm just happy to have it working now.

Any comments before I give the 300 points to someone..

Cheers..
Only one comment on August 30 from me, so the timediff seams to be from the specified TZ in our profiles (I'll check that with linda:).
Hi, I'm back..(PC has been down)

I have decided that I will invite "ahoffman" to "answer" this question.

I will allsow make a special question for "mattcei" for his suggestions to.

Thanks everyone for the help..
