odbc docu 'Perform translation for character data'

Where can I found documentation about the MS SQL-Server ODBC Configuration option 'Perform translation for character data'?
Surprisingly, this option seems to be particularily important for correct string-date conversion in 7.0 and solves my previous question (Title: "string to datetime conversion error in 7.0")

thanks. I have posted a follow up question regarding the influence of this option on datetime conversion, which is everything but obvious to me.

This question was awarded, but never cleared due to the JSP-500 errors of that time. It was "stuck" against userID -1 versus the intended expert whom you awarded. This corrects the problem and the expert will now receive these points; points verified.
