I/O Conflicts

I am having I/O Range conflict problem which is preventing my modem from working. Here is the situation--

I am running Windows95 Version 4.00.950B on a Pentium class PC.  During booting, I get an error message "conflict I/O Ports: 2F8". I can proceed ahead with booting by pressing F1 or access the CMOS.

My device manager shows the following--

Under Modem-- Resources I/O Range 02F8- 02FF, IRQ 03. Conflict Device List "Input/Output Range 02F8- 02FF used by Communications Port (Com 5)". Modem is set for "Port: Com 2"

Under Ports (Com & LPT)
Com1 IRQ 4  I/O Range 03F8-03FF
Com 5 IRQ 3 I/O Range 02f8-02FF. Conflicting Devices List "IRQ 03 used by modem, I/O Range 02F8-02FF used by modem"
There is no Com 2 listed under this section and cannot change the IRQ or Range setting so as not to conflict with another device.
LPT1 IRQ 7 I/O Range 0378-037F and 0778-077B

I have no idea what the nature of Com 5 is. Removed it from Device Manager but on subsequent boot, Windows replaced it again.

Under Modem Diagnostics I get the following--
Windows detected the following Ports and installed following devices
Com 1 "No modem"
Com2 " Modem" present
Com 5 " No Modem"

Here is info from CMOS
Onboard Serial Port 1  3F8/IRQ 4
Onboard Serial Port 2 2F8/IRQ 3
Onboard Parallel Port  378/IRQ 7

This conflict of Com 2 and Com 5 prevents my modem from working. I do not know where Com 5 comes from. How do I change the settings to eliminate this conflict???

Thanks!

After disabling COM 2 in BIOS, boot into Wiondows in SAFE
MODE and physically remove COM 5 from device manager,
and also remove any listings under MODEM in DEVICE
MANAGER, shut down your computer, re-boot and Windows
should sort out your modem with plug and play.
