Getting an old Mac Performa on the net

We have an old Machintosh Perfoma with 8Mb of ram, a working 14.4 modem and System 7.5 (updated from 7.1.something) and we are trying to get it on the net. There are several providers available but none provide help for such an old machintosh. As for Software we have Netscape Naviagator 3.0 and MacPPP. Although there are several open transport files on the HD the the software one of the providers provides, maintains that OT is not installed. When clicking on the files the computer says that the program necessary for viewing these files cannot be found (or something like that - we have a german version of the OS, which is also why there is so little support - most people here use PCs) Dragging the files onto the system folder did not help. I also heard that for older computers MacTCP would be an option.  However I have not found it anywhere on the not. Further, whenever I do find a program on the net (such as FreePPP) and download it onto my PC, put it onto a disk and carry it over to the Mac i do not know how to unpack them. The files appear as PC documents with the extension .hqx. I'd be really glad if someone could give me rather detailed (all I know is how to turn it on and off and execute programs adn copy files) instructions on how to get this Mac online. Thank you very much in advance

Let me get your details straigt, you are running a German version of MacOS7.5.? on a Mac Performa (number?) and want to get on the net but don't know what software to use.

One easy solution is to download the full install of 7.5.3 which is now free, this is big though.  This has open transport included in it. You can then upgrade to 7.5.5 and get a good free system with instructions.

This is where you can get the English version:

http://til.info.apple.com/techinfo.nsf/artnum/n26181

Before you do this however, we might as well see what you actually have now.  What version of the system do you have?

7.5.0?  If so you may want to upgrade it to 7.5.3 which should give you the necessary files and documents.

You will need to check for a few things first.

Do a search for MacTCP  MacTCP DNR and MacTCP Prep to see if they are on your hard disk.

If they are, MacTCP should be in the control panel folder, MacTCP DNR in the System folder itself, and MacTCP Prep in the preferences folder.

On system 7.5 you are given the option of Open Transport or MacTCP (classic networking) in a control panel located I believe in the Apple Extras folder on your hard disk. Look for this.

Once you have this, you will want to select Open Transport then restart your computer.

Now you just need to get the information from your provider and set up the MacTCP or TCP/IP control panel depending on which system you have.

If you want info on MacTCP go to http://www.math.niu.edu/~behr/Comp/mactcp.html

This is an excellent resource and it also gives you a link to Open Transport information.

I hope this helps.

OK. Just one more question. Since I don't have MACTCP installed, updating the system to 7.5.5 seems to be a reasonabele option. I can download the OS files onto my pc and put them onto disks, but how do I install/uncomprss it on the Performa.

thank you very much. you have alrady been a great help.

you need an application called mindexpander or another called stuffit expander  both are free and available at macdownload.com

just drag the .hqx files onto them and they will be expanded.  you should then be able to install them.

hope this is what you need.
