I have 768K DSL service, however,my provider offers much higher speeds
at much higher prices of course.I would like to know where the speed is controlled from, is it at the TelCo
or is it in the modem.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

In response to your question your bandwith is controlled from the CO(central Office).  I know wouldn't it be nice if we could hit some dip's and instantly get that 7mb connection we've wanted for years :-)

Most often time this can be done at the central office,  however depending how far away you are from the CO they might need to run a different version of DSL to get the rates you need.  Most often times if you are using adsl to get higher connection speeds you need to be within 1-1.2 miles of the CO.
