Since you didn't give an operating system here is a generic answer

one other note. Since setup is in the root directory of the cd no need for the \

Can you explore data cd's and find the setup.exe and double click on it. does that give you the same error?

also, maybe it is not setup.exe, but rather install.exe or another *.exe command to load...

like bill said above, its best to just explore the cd and figure out exactly what you need to type at command prompt, or if already exploring just click the load/setup/install...

Specify the operating system you are using.

This seems like you are doing it through DOS.  If you are then try the following commands.
D:
cd \
setup

This shouldn't make any difference and you should probably get the same error message.

What application are you trying to install?  Is it the same application you are trying to install or different apps?  It sounds like the file concerned is possibly corrupt.

i would guess the software u are trying to setup either must be copied to the local harddisk first or you are installin a software that is for antoher operating system
