hi,

i'm setting up linux for my pc chips m571 motherboard which has onboard video and sound. err, i usualy use xf86config and it detects my hardware, but it won't even go into vga16, so what chipset is my video using? and what are the dac speeds? are there any other xfree86 configuration tools that autodetect video hardware?

just type setup at the console prompt, use Xconfigurator, will autodetect your card.

The SiS 5597 chipset is supported under the XF86_SVGA server.  You may have been unable to load under VGA16 because it wasn't installed.  Check your distribution media, and make sure that both servers are installed, then you can run the XF86Setup program (which is run under the VGA16 server), which should detect your hardware and configure it for you.
