Splash screen

I have a new IBM Aptiva. Does anyone know how I can get the IBM splash screen from comming up on Boot? I want to see the DOS check screen on boot like I did on my old computer.I didn't get a Win98 disk with the computer so I downloaded tweakui off the net but am not sure where to install on my computer desk top or windows folder. Thanks>> Bill

Hi Bill,

There could be one of two reasons for this splash screen. IBM could have added their own Logo.sys file in the root of the boot drive (usually "C") or they could have loaded it via the DLL file used in Windows 98. I would use Find, Files and Folders and search for logo.sys first, and if found, rename it to logo.old and then reboot.

As to the dos memory post boot screen, is that coming up now or is it booting past it?

Hi Dennis
no I don't get to see the Dos post boot screen. Thats what I want to see & not the IBM logo screen as I see now. It goes right from the IBM splash screen to windows boot up. If its not one thing its another (:>) now it won't shut down. It goes to windows is shutting down & stops I've tried everything windows tell me to do to get past that but no way?? I guess I'll keep diging on that one. Thanks a lot. I'll see if I can find that file. >> Bill

Okay, the shutdown issue is normally not a problem, but I'll need to know whether your using the original Win98 version or Second Edition. There's a fix for the original version, which requires you to click Start, Run and type in Msconfig and click OK. Click the Advanced button and choose "Disable Fast Shutdown". The Second Edition has a patch for the shotdown fix. Let me know if you have the SE version and I'll give you the URL for the patch.

W1Cheney, For the splash screen of "IBM", Go to the CMOS/BIOS by pressing <F2> or <DEL> once the machine starts. Checking with the BIOS configuration, if there is settings for "quiet boot" or similar wordings depending on your version of CMOS/BIOS. Select [Disabled].

Disabled the "Quiet boot" will display normal POST messages.

If enabled it, it will display OEM logo instead of POST messages.

Try and let us know your result.      pslh

Thank, pslh and Dennis that all helped I went into cmos & didabled logo boot. Now the IBM splash screen only comes up for a short time. Then I can see the dos check & setup screen before windows boots up. The shut down problem was caused by Realplayer. I had the same problem with my old computer with Realplayer. I took it out of startup & things work fine now. Realplayer just doesn't want to shut down so it hangs up on computer shut down. Thanks again  Bill

W1Cheney, <<I'm going to run out of points fast with all the good help I get on this board>>.
Your points for this question is being held once you've submitted your question. Therefore, if you've accepted the proposed answer/comment as answer, there is no change to your current points.

<<Accept comment as answer>> only working if the question is being rejected once as I know.

Since there is no rejection of this question before, can you find the option <accept comment as answer> in your question dialogue box?

W1Cheney, would you like
(1) to select any above comment and graded by <accept comment as answer> , or
(2) to ask either one to post an proposed answer, or
(3) to ask either one to post an proposed answer and then we share the points, or
(4) to ask either one to post an proposed answer and then you post another new one to award point for the other.

Would like to hear your opinion so that we can close this question.         pslh

Hi pslh
As you know I'm new on this board and I'm not sure how it works. The answer was fine from you. So you can close out the question and do whats right with the points?? I really don't see the option in the dialogue box where I accept the answer. Think you & I will get there in time. Bill

W1Cheney, The <accept comment as answer> is a new feature since Oct23,1999. I saw some questioners can select this function without any previous Reject of any proposed answer. (I don't know how they worked it out). It looks like in each comment just next to the logged time there may be the option there???

This is a test for us to learn this feature more.
I post this as an proposed answer.

Then you reject this. Afterwards, you'll see the differences in your question dialogue box or the layout of each comment to see if there is any options other than <accept> / <reject>, <accept comment as answer>..

Finally, I'll post another one for you to grade.

Thus, you'll know how the mechanism is working here.
------
PS. I would like to share the points with Dennis as this question contains a splash screen and shutdown matters.

<where do I find this screen next time?> which one?

W1CheneyAuthor Commented:
The screen that had the checks on how I liked the help. Do you send that?

Patricia Siu-Lai HoCommented:
W1Cheney, when someone has posted an proposed answer in your question, that screen will be auto showing for you to access.

As I've posted the proposed answer, you could then see that.

Some cases, the proposed answer does not mean more important than the other comments. Thus, you can take the choice to reject it.  You can also ask the one who posted the comment to submit the answer for you to grade.
