i just downloaded oracle8i enterprise edition from oracle. I ./runInstaller and it told me that my display is not set and to try again after i set my display. The thing is i know that i setup my display for xwin but im not sure if i set it up for console? how am i to setup my display???

There are a number of problems with Orale 8i.  I'd suugest you go to TechNet (technet.oracle.com) and look at the threads there.  With respect to the specific problems you're having:

1)  Make sure your DISPLAY variable is set correctly (to something like 0:0.0).  Also make sure you've run xauth to allow access to the display by someone other than root.

2)  I never could get runInstaller to work.  If you look on the  CD, in /install/linux, there's a file called "runIns.sh".  Run that instead; and you should at least be able to get the installer to come up and let you find all of the other problems :-)
