Form Questions.

I have a form set up at www.i-conceptsmarketing.com/imcpayment.htm  I am trying to get this page emailed to me.  It used to know I can't get it to on any server.  I have changed several servers and have recreated several times.  Also, I would love to learn how to make it so that they have to enter in every required field.  If they don't it will tell them.

Any and all help would be greatly appriciated.

Well first regarding having to have a check on entering every field filled up and  a warning mesg forcing them to do it, you can ofcourse write a script in VB Script or Java Script and include it in your HTML Page.   That is a tedious process for non programmers.  You have a easy option in FP 98 which allows you to have such Form Validations easily.  You can choose every text box in the form and go to its properties and choose the Validate option and check on the clause which says "Required"  FP will write the script for that.

Regd. having your form results being mailed to you,  you need to have a SMTP Server for that.  Check out with your ISP the address of their SMTP Server and you need to enter those details in FrontPage.  The SMTP Serve should be inturn configured to access the Mail Server.  It is not possible that easily.

Front Page will allow you to email the form results.  In the Editor select any part of the form and right click.  Select "Form Properties".  You should have an option for Email processing.

By selecting  each form field, you can also specify "form field validation" properties.

I have done that.  I have entered my email address also.  The only way I can receive the results is by the webpage that it saves it to.  Of coarse I would love to have it emailed to me.

I suspect then that the problem is with your server.  I don't really know how FP sends email form submissions, but I would think that it would require some sort of email capacity from the server.  If the server won't/can't do it, you will be out of luck with email submissions.

Did you get a chance to look at the form validation capabilities?  Actually, this would be relatively simple to do using JavaScript (it's a pretty common thing).  If FP is not useful to you for this, ask about a JS routine.

I have changed servers 3 times.  I don't know.  However, thanks.  I will ask about js routing.

If you want JS routine, I will be happy to supply one.  Just specify what you want to validate (i.e., what fields and what constraints).

Your source indicates the web-bot form results should be sent by e-mail.  When you edit the form page (I'm assuming on-line editting) do you get a message saying your server is not configured to send e-mail?

NOTE 1: If the 'FrontPage Editor' dialog box appears stating that the FrontPage Server Extensions have not been configured to send e-mail, contact your Web hosting company and request that the Web administrator configure the server to send e-mail.

NOTE 2: If you are the Web server administrator, insert the FrontPage 98 CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive, and browse to the \SNERK\enu\admin.htm file. Click the 'Setting Up Your E-mail Transport' hyperlink.

Usually you'll get an error if the extensions are not set up properly, either at design time (depending on if you are designing live or publishing) or at run-time...however your form also sends results to a file, so you may mask the runtime error.  Try removing the save to file portion and see if the results are e-mailed to you or if you get an error.

On some UNIX machines using FP98 extensions there is a problem with send mail which are discussed in the following kb article.

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q198/2/26.ASP

What web server are you (or your ISP) using?

Cheers,
Rod

Thanks for your help.  You deserve more than 100 points.

I don't get a frontpage server extension problem.  (Note 1)

I am using Win95.  I know I should change.  And, yes I do get that coment about contacting my ISP about \SNERK\enu\admin.htm.  I have always gotten that message and it did work at one time.

Should I upgrade to win 98?

Any help would be greatlful.

dj:
Just for drill, stuff the following in the [FrontPage 3.0] section of your frontpg.ini file found in the Windows folder:

SMTPHost=mail.example.microsoft.com

Replace the mail.example.microsoft.com with the outgoing mailhost address that you have set up in your mail client (browser).

Since you aren't getting the Extensions error Rod mentioned this might be your only problem, but if it doesn't fly, leave it there and tell your host service to enable the email capability. There are still some host support folks who haven't locked in to FP extension config.

Rod:
Have you found the FP2000 CD folder for that same setup? It's different than 98.

Now you have to change the address (everything to the right of SMTPHost=

This will be your outgoing mailhost address ... in Outlook Express click Tools-Account for yours.  In Netscape Communicator click File-Preferences-Mail&News Groups-mailservers for yours.
If you are using something else I'm lost. (:))

Leave the points alone - they are ok.

Okay, Don ... I just looked at your form properties.  You have two email addresses separated by a comma.

First - if you are using FP98 as indicated in your source code, then do this: delete the second email address. Now submit a test form to yourself. If it works, then go back and add the second address with a semicolon separator. Microsoft's position in FP98 is that only one (1) email address is supported. I've run two addresses with a comma - but I'm on a Unix box ... this is systemic ... different with different systems.

Let us know.

What you propose as an answer is basically what I proposed as a comment some 10 hours earlier.

Since then, the discussion has continued, with others adding information, suggestions, and support.

I think your action was, at best, premature and probably ill-advised.

I hope the discussion will continue until dj is satisfied.
