"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

If the file doesn't exist, do I have to create it.

And after that, will I need to reboot ?
create the file, and the route is there after reboot.
To avoid reboot for now, add the default route manually.
with the file, it will be permanent after reboot.
If you want to have routing works without reboot, insert

route add default <default gateway IP> 1
