5634 PEW modem not detected on com port 4

My Archtek 5634 (ESS56T-PI)internal modem is not detected on com port 4. My external USR Sportster has no problems connecting.I have tried most things including reinstalling the Unimdm.tsp file from Windows 98 SE.It used to work at home and now I've changed location it comes up with cannot detect modem problem. I have the drivers and believe them to be ok.I have downloaded the 5634 driver from Archtek and now don't know what to do with it.

Oh no, I may be the wrong person to ask that question to, I am a beliver in external modems, since they are so easy to switch to a different computer (plus they are not Winmodems) I like the US Robotics 56K fax modem since I don't use the voice feature any, I do have an external USR Voice/Fax/ modem too that I use as a backup or spare (I got it on a trade) but if you don't need the voice then just get the fax modem (about $80 cheaper) I also perfer the USR modems but they are more expensive but very good

Appropriate software and drivers must be loaded before the Windows modem will function, (notice this says before)
You should run the installation software first and this should find the modem and install the correct drivers, do you have the disk that came with the modem?

In Device manager does the modem show up there at all?
Did you try to install using the Add hardware in the control panel? Let windoze search for new hardware.

The modem, manager and numerator all appear in the device manager. When uninstalled and reinstalled it finds drivers on its accompanying disk and installs them as normal. There is no hint that anything is wrong until I try to connect when I get the 'can not detect modem' message.I wondered if it was to do with being on com port 4 as I cannot move it and port 4 does not appear on the device manager.
I have the downloaded driver for 5634 PEW on my hard drive but don't know what to do with it.

Many thanks.

If you have the new driver, just go into Device manager, double click on your modem, click on the driver tab, now click on update driver and point it to the folder where the new driver is located

I have attempted to load the new drivers and now my modem is not detected at all.On running the Install Hardware option I get ' windows detected a modem but was unable to add it because the setup information file is corrupt or cannot be found'.
I think my best option is to go and buy an external modem. What do you think/recommend?

Archtek Modems suck.  I have the same one trying to use it for NT or 2000 is a bend over backwards proposition and tech support is non-existant.

First trying to get the modem to function on any other com port other than 5 is impossible.

Follow the directions for removing the modem including any Registry work.

Reinstall the modem using the default Com 5: that it wants.

Reboot

Everything should now work correctly.
