Modem initializing problem.

I have a Newcom 56k modem that I cannot get to initialize.  Tryed both pnp and jumper setings.  When you hit connect the modem says its initializing but it never goes any futher.  Can somone please help?

if that modem comes with jumpers then set the jumpers to com2 irq3. Also disable com2 in the bios

and link /dev/modem to /dev/ttyS1

rm /dev/modem
ln -s /dev/ttyS1 /dev/modem

Ya I tryed that and it still didnt work. But thx anyway.
If the modem is PnP, make sure that you disable the PnP settings in your bios.  You may need to remove the modem and reinstall it so that your NVRAM settings reset.  I had a similar problem with a US Robotics.  Of course I am assuming that this modem is not a WinModem in which case it will never work with any version of Linux.  Hope this helps.
