pop3/tcp server failing (looping), service terminated

What is this error and how do I correct it?

inetd[26606]: pop3/tcp server failing (looping), service terminated

When this happens I have to kill inetd and start it back up so that pop3 starts responding again. Thanks for the help.

obviously too much parallel traffic on port 110. take "tcpserver" or "xinetd" to serve pop3.

search http://www.freshmeat.net for these tools.

btw: kill -1 is enough to make inetd listen to 110 again.

So I need to load tcpserver or xinetd and then in my inetd.conf file do what?

I am new so I need it spelled out for me. Thanks, Keith

i recommend xinetd because it is not so hard to configure if you know inetd.

xinetd is a REPLACEMENT for inetd. besides other great things, you can (and this is important for you) define on a per service basis, how many concurrent instances of a service are to be called at maximum.

just download it (follow freshmeat.net), edit the xinetd.conf according to your inetd.conf, set instances for service pop3 to whatever you like/ whatever your server can/should handle, and be happy.

I will try this. I am working on a new system anyway and it has the option to use xinetd. Thanks, Keith
