Hard drive problem

I was given a PC with no hard drive.  I installed one but with restarting the computer it is not finding it. I'm getting message "Drive Not ready. Insert boot disk."   Now I've never installed a HD before.  Is there something I need to do for the PC to recognize there is a hard drive?  I'd appreciate any help.

when you power up the PC go into the BIOS settings and set up the hdd in the bios table, you will probably need to know the vitals on the drive you are installing... size etc....
