kernel-rebuild problems in Linux-Mandrake 6.1 (MacMillan Deluxe 6.5)

I recently upgraded my system from Linux-Mandrake 6.0 to 6.1. Everything seems to be working fine, but when I tried to rebuild my kernel, make menuconfig exited with an Error 2 message.

I tried using make config instead but encountered a problem when I ran make dep.

Is this a bug? Better still, does anyone know of a fix?

Thanks in advance.

Do you have tcl installed on your system?  I have a redhat box which does not have tcl/tk, and thus 'make menuconfig' does not work for me.

If you export your display, can you do a 'make xconfig'?

- what's the error message?

- perhaps try a 'make clean' first

The normal steps I take (please check to see if that's the reason)

- cd /usr/src/linux
- make mrproper menuconfig
- "make kernel changes"
- make dep clean bzImage
- mv /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot
- mv /lib/modules/2.2.9-27mdk /lib/modules/2.2.9-27mdk.old
- make modules modules_install
- cd /lib/modules/2.2.9-27mdk
- depmod -a
- vi /etc/lilo.conf (to reflect new kernel)
- lilo
- reboot

So, I don't think it's due to that. Perhaps some other thing then?
