i try to install dual boot win98-linux ?

i try to install linux redhat 6.0 on my pentium 3 450 mhz with 13 Gbyte of HD.

I know that i have to put my boot sector before the 1024 cylander.

The install goes well until i have to create a boot disk or install the boot on the master boot record. I obtain an vague error like ('an error occured when you try to  ...)

what can i do to avoid this problem ?

Do you have FAT32 in your Win98 partition? It could be one reason why it gives you that error message. I've installed my Win98 on FAT16 and SUSE6.1+Win98 dualboots without problems; using LILO, of course.

I've formatted my HD and when i try to install linux with only linux partitions, i have the same problem.

All the installation goes well but i've a problem when i try to install the boot record or when i try to make a disk boot !
i've installed redhat 6.0 on my machine with win98

it should work, i believe that the default config of the kernel supports fat32 filesystems

8gb hd (1/2 win98 fat32 and 1/2 linux --600mb as /home, 96mb as swap and the rest as the / dir)

i have no problem, it should work, how do you have yours partioned?  you might try running 'fdisk /mbr' before installing linux as this will re-write the master boot record, also if you are ambitious maybe having you / partition as the first primary partion

i did have the same problem with redhat 5.0, but i kept working on it and i finally got it to work, i'll try to remember what i did
You need to partion you harddrive with Partition Magic; and creat a partion for linux.

Once you've created you linux partition, you can install all of you other linux file systems on that.  Install Lilo on the first partition, /dev/hda1.

If you run Windows setup after this, LILO gets wiped out.  Microsoft wants to be the only OS on the machine!! Windows even insists to be on the first hard drive.
The problem is not to partitioning the disk, but when the install is completed, i can't install the bootloader and i can't create a boot disk for linux !
I have encountered similar problems with the redhat installer.

One suggestion, make the first primary partition /dev/hda1 as your root partition, and make it small (100 MB)*

Most programs reside in /usr, so you can create a huge /usr (2 GB is very large by today's linux software standard) on /dev/hda2.

* a small root partition also helps reduce fragmentation of frequently used system files, in addition to facilitating error recovery in the event of a crash.
On some BIOSes the information loaded at boot, must reside below the 1024th cylinder (like the kernel image, and bootloader).  They only allowed so many bits in the BIOS for file locations.  Most configurations make /dev/hda1 a small partition (2-5MB) and mount it as /boot.  A small root on /dev/hda1 should work the same.

After that, your other patitions can go anywhere.

Sometimes its a problem with the LBA 'linear' mode addressing. Though I don't remember how to set that at install time.
I had the same problem you first described.  I'll get back to you when I find an answer, for now, I just want to keep the updates.
Sorry, that didn't help.  I haven't experienced the same trouble, all my dual boot systems (NT and 95) loaded without a glich.  I'm using Linux-Mandrake 6.0 distributed by Macmillan Publishers.
