Sending file from Word

Hello all. I'm running an Acer system: 400 MHz, 128MB, 3-Com/US Robotics 56k Modem ( not a winmodem). Software is Outlook Express and Office Professional. I understand how to send a file from Word. I have set up the proper profile and Outlook is being accessed properly, I think. This sequence is being done this way as a favor to my wife, who does not yet understand how to attach a file to an email. A typical sequence is as follows: After preparing the document she wants to send, she activates the dial-up, gets connected, and selects Send File. A prompt is made for profile to use, she selects hers, addresses the email and clicks send. here is the problem. There seems to be a 50-50 shot as to whether or not the file is sent immediately. In my experiments, where I can watch the data thru my modem control panel, sometimes you see the email sent right away, other times there is no activity. Word believes the file has been sent because it allows itself to be closed down, otherwise, it would report a file still not sent ( I have seen this a couple times). Invariably, closing Word, opening a new document and then repeating the same sequence sends both files. Obviously, the file is sitting in a que somewhere.. but where and why ? I need for the file to be sent immediately so that my wife  doesn't worry ( and I don't suffer the consequences of the ineveitable " Computers are stupid" ). I know that I do not have to open the dialer separately, but have experienced a couple problems with outlook activating the dialer and performing the op-eration itself. Perhaps you might have some suggestions there also. It seems like whenever it does, it disconnects very quickly, even tho I have no setting telling it to do so.. at least I don't think I do. Thanks for your help

Sounds like you're using Outlook not Outlook Express (you mention selecting profiles which is an Outlook thing not an OE thing). Which are you using? Sorry to ask but it makes a big difference in how to handle things...

you are correct. I use outlook express for my regular email, but it is indeed outlook that is being activated when send file is selected, along with the appropriate profile. Sorry for the confusion.

In that case, make sure that you've got OE selected as your Simple MAPI client (it's in the Tools menu > Options dialog under OE 4.x, under OE 5.x simply setting OE to be the default Internet mail client also sets it to be the default MAPI client)

Thank you Vince. It worked great. I don't know how I missed that, but I'm glad it was an easy fix. The Send function also works correctly now if you are not dialed in already, and will open the dialer, log in, and send the file. Thanks again
