Animating a system tray icon

I have an app that runs in the system tray.  How can i animate the icon so that when the program is active (every 5 minutes) the icon animates to indicate so.  I am using the 'shell notify icon' api calls.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Set up a timer in your application, and modify the icon that is displayed when the timer goes off.

This will require you creating several icons that when displayed in order at a time interval, will give the appearance of animation.

I think mandhjo's comment is the best option. Keep in mind that using an extra control will always affect speed, memory and performance.
It's not that difficult anyway!
